Read Your Own Numbers Before Anyone Reads Them For You

Literacy is a skill, not a personality

Most people were never taught money. They were taught subjects. So when a payslip, a loan agreement or an investment statement arrives, the response is not stupidity — it is unfamiliarity. Unfamiliarity is fixable.

Financial literacy simply means you can look at a number that concerns your life and say what it is, where it came from and what it will do next month. Nothing more mystical than that.

The three numbers that start everything

Before budgets, before investing, before any strategy, there are three numbers: what comes in, what is already committed, and what remains. Almost every financial decision you will ever make sits on top of those three figures.

Income is what actually lands in your account, not what your contract says. Commitments are the amounts that leave whether or not you pay attention — rent, transport, debt repayments, subscriptions, school fees. What remains is your working margin, and it is the only part of your money that is genuinely under your control this month.

Interest, inflation and the cost of waiting

Two forces quietly shape every long financial decision. Interest works for you when you own the asset and against you when you owe the debt. Inflation reduces what your money can buy while it sits still.

You do not need formulas to respect them. You need one habit: whenever money is involved over time, ask which direction interest is flowing, and whether the value is sitting still.

Learning in plain language

If a financial product cannot be explained to you in language you understand, that is a signal about the explanation, not about you. Ask what it costs, what it does, what happens if you stop, and who benefits when you sign.

Confidence is not a feeling you wait for. It is what accumulates after you have understood a handful of things properly.
