Why Can't I Save Money? Four Honest Reasons — and What Fixes Each
Reason one: saving is last in the sequence
If saving happens with what is left over, it will not happen. There is rarely anything left over, and the amount that is left is never predictable.
The fix is order, not willpower: move the amount on the day the income arrives, before anything else is decided.
Reason two: every increase is absorbed
Lifestyle Inflation™ is the pattern where each raise, bonus or new client is matched by a permanent increase in living costs. Income rises and margin stays flat.
The fix is to decide the split of any future increase in advance — before it arrives, while it is still abstract.
Reason three: debt is consuming the margin
When repayments cover interest and fees without reducing balances, saving is mathematically impossible. The money is working, but not for you.
The fix is to see the balances, not just the instalments, and to direct any spare amount at one balance until it closes.
Reason four: your plan carries other people
Generous Overgiving™ is real support given ahead of your own plan. It is not a character flaw, and the answer is not to stop giving.
The fix is to decide the amount in advance so that giving is a planned act rather than an open-ended one.
Which one is yours?
Almost nobody has all four. Most people have one that dominates, and closing it changes the picture more than a general resolution to be careful.
Naming it is the work. The action that follows is usually small.
